Motivational Interviewing -Treating Clients with Mental Illness & Substance Use Disorders

Motivational Interviewing is an empirically based, client-centered counseling approach in which
the counselor uses a non-confrontational & non-judgmental style to resolve ambivalence that
prohibits change (Miller & Rollnick, 2013; Rollnick, Miller, & Butler, 2008). Without addressing
ambivalence in treatment, a client’s progress may be inhibited due to clinical errors that may be
unknown to the counselor. The purpose of this presentation is to assist clinicians with identify-
ing and understanding factors associated with the successful engagement and treatment of”difficult to treat” individuals with mental health and substance use disorders. 3-hour virtual event.
