Tropics watch: NHC forecasters watching several tropical waves for potential strengthening

The Atlantic basin remained calm Wednesday as forecasters keep an eye on several tropical waves for what could become the season's next tropical storm, based on the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center.

Warm waters near Central America are a prime zone for potential tropical activity over the next couple of weeks, according to AccuWeather meteorologists.

A slow-developing tropical system could take shape during the middle of June as a tropical wave moves west into the waters surrounding Central America, said AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok.

Here's the latest update from the NHC as of 8 a.m. June 8:

What's out there and where are they?

The Hurricane Center is monitoring three tropical waves:

  • The first, is in the Central Atlantic and is moving to the west.

  • The second is west of St. Lucia and Martinque, and also is moving west.

  • The third wave is in the Central Caribbean, south of Jamaica. It also is moving toward the west.

How likely are they to strengthen?

It's too early at this time to determine if there will be any impact to land from the tropical waves.

Who is likely to be impacted?

Forecasters urge all residents to continue monitoring the tropics and to always be prepared during what's expected to be an active hurricane season.
